Ford Says June U.S. Auto Sales Slide Lowest Among Major Makers

By Keith Naughton
June 29 (Bloomberg) -- Ford Motor Co., the only major U.S. automaker that hasn’t filed for bankruptcy, said its June sales of cars and trucks will be the “lowest” decline of any major automaker.
“The worst is behind us,” said George Pipas, in a briefing at the company’s headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan. “We may see economic growth in the second half and a higher level of auto sales.”
Automakers for June may post an annual U.S. sales rate that exceeds 10 million vehicles for the first time this year, according to estimates by Edmunds.com, J.D. Power & Associates, CSM Worldwide and Deutsche Bank. U.S. sales of cars and light trucks fell to 13.2 million last year after averaging more than 16 million annually through this decade.
Ford is benefiting from being the only major U.S. automaker not going through a government-financed bankruptcy, said John Wolkonowicz, auto analyst for IHS Global Insight in Lexington, Massachusetts. The company is the second-largest U.S. automaker, behind General Motors Corp.
“Ford has a good product line, excellent quality and they don’t have the stigma of having taken government money,” Wolkonowicz said in an interview. “They’re like the little engine that could and the public likes that.”
Ford’s U.S. sales fell 24 percent in May while the industry total dropped 34 percent.

Ford of Ocala benefits from no Gov't Bailout!

Ford could be gaining ground with consumers who appreciate the fact that Ford has not resorted to a federal bailout to keep itself in business.
That’s good news for Ford, although I keep saying
Ford is wise not to crow too soon or too loud. Ford could some day find itself in the same boat as Chrysler and GM, unless sales improve.
In May, not a single brand in the U.S. market posted higher sales than the year-ago month, according to
AutoData sales figures. That’s the first time in recent memory I can remember that happening. In recent months, somebody somewhere has always managed an increase, even if it was a tiny brand with an increase of less than 1 percent.
CNW Marketing Research reported today the results of surveys starting in December 2008. The results showed an increase in the percentage of consumers who indicated they were more favorably inclined to consider buying a Ford, because Ford didn’t ask for or receive federal assistance.
In December, that group made up 19.6 percent of the respondents. In February it was 27 percent, and in May 38 percent, CNW said.
In the most recent survey, about 9 percent of respondents said that “not accepting bailout funds” was the single most important reason for considering a Ford, according to CNW.
“A ‘Buy American’ attitude has been growing, but the primary beneficiary is likely to be Ford which is not only a U.S. brand, but not owned by the federal government. Consumers in large part — better than 80 percent — believe the bailout funds were misspent and government ownership is anathema to how business should be done,”
CNW said, in its monthly Retail Automotive Summary.
“Time will likely heal these attitudes. When Chrysler was purchased by Daimler, a large portion of the WWII generation said they wouldn’t buy a car from a German company,” CNW said.

Quality is Job #1 at Ford of Ocala!

On Monday June 22, 2009, 1:01 pm EDT

  • Ford brand's quality continues to improve faster than the overall industry; Ford brand remains statistically tied with top Japanese automakers
  • Ford brand's initial quality improved for the eighth consecutive year
Ford F-150, Mustang, Edge and Mercury Sable were quality leaders in their respective vehicle segments
  • F-250/F-350 Super-Duty manufacturing plant, Kentucky Truck in Louisville, was awarded a Bronze Plant Quality Award

DEARBORN, Mich., June 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Ford Motor Company (NYSE:

F - News) recorded another strong improvement in J.D. Power and Associates' 2009 Initial Quality Study, putting the Ford and Mercury brands in a statistical tie with the top Japanese brands.
The Ford brand, which continues to outpace the overall industry's quality improvement, now has posted eight consecutive years of gains in the closely watched quality study based on consumer evaluations after the first three months of new-vehicle ownership. Overall, the Ford brand improved by 10 points over last year's study.
"It is gratifying to see our commitment to quality paying off," said Bennie Fowler, Ford group vice president, Global Quality. "Ford has demonstrated consistent and continuous quality improvement. We're now tied with the best of the Japanese automakers and we won't be satisfied until Ford is the industry's global quality leader."
Some of Ford's most popular nameplates received top honors for their respective segment, including Ford F-150, Mustang, Edge and Mercury Sable.
J.D. Power and Associates 2009 Initial Quality Study is based on responses from 80,930 new 2009 model-year vehicle owners after they have driven their new vehicles for three months. It measures problems per 100 vehicles and was based on November through February registrations.
In April, Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-based RDA Group's Global Quality Research System (GQRS) showed that Ford has surpassed Honda and is in a statistical tie with Toyota in initial quality. That report, an analysis of "things gone wrong" in new vehicles as measured by customers, is commissioned quarterly by Ford.
"The blue oval is becoming synonymous with high quality with customers," Fowler said. "We're not only dramatically reducing defects, we are delivering the long-term durability and the superior craftsmanship that today's customers demand."

Details on Cash for Clunkers @ Ford of Ocala!

I don't expect to have anything concrete for about a month but it seems like some details are emerging on various websites. Basically your old car/truck/van will be worth $3500 or $4500 in trade depending on which vehicle you plan to buy. If your new one gets 4 MPGs more than your old one you qualify for $3500. Improve your MPGs by 10 MPGs and you get $4500 for trade in. This is above and beyond any rebates we may be offering at the moment. The vehicle must be 1984 or newer, drivable and owned by you for a period of time. It will be recycled as scrap only. It must be applied to a new vehicle only. Program will probably run from Aug to Dec or less. You can find more on the web by searching 'Cash for Clunkers' or calling us @ 1.800.292.3338. A lot of this came from Edmunds.com. We have salespeople and sales support researching it further. We will post more as we get it.

"cash for clunkers" coming to Ford of Ocala!

The Congress has finally passed the 'Cash for Clunkers' bill. I reported on it early in March while it was still being hammered into shape, I believe. It sailed thru the House but was stalled in the Senate this week as they hashed out some of the details. I believe it had to do with the difference in MPG, gas mileage difference between your trade in and the vehicle you were buying.
Basically what it says is that if you trade in a car with limited MPG on a new, more fuel efficient ride the government will allow up to $4500 in trade. I'll see if I can locate a definitive article and post it here soon. In the meantime, come on in and speak to a sales associate or product specialist to see what is available. You'll be pleasantly surprised by how many of our vehicles provide better gas mileage without compromising power or comfort.
Call us @ 1.800.292.3338 or locally @ 352.732.4800 for more information. Or you can visit us 24/7 @ www.fordocala.net or www.fordofocala.com to browse our inventory, check the latest incentives and submit a credit application for pre-approval!

President Obama loves his Ford Escape Hybrid!

Detroit Free Press May 19th

President Barack Obama may be the only investor willing and able to keep General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC alive, but his biggest endorsement at today's announcement on fuel economy went to Ford Motor Co.
At the end of a Rose Garden ceremony unveiling new mileage standards, Obama stepped back from the podium, then threw in an impromptu plug for his hybrid Escape sport utility vehicle.
"By the way, I just want to mention, I think I still have my Ford parked in Chicago," Obama said. "It's a Ford hybrid, it runs great, you guys should take a look."
Ford Chief Executive Alan Mulally, standing next to the president, pumped his fists in the air as the crowd laughed.
As he turned to leave again — perhaps realizing there were executives from nine other automakers standing behind him, including GM and Chrysler — Obama threw in one more aside.
"But there are also some outstanding hybrids and energy-independent cars represented up here, so I didn't want to just advertise for one," he said.
Chrysler Chief Executive Bob Nardelli and GM Chief Executive Fritz Henderson ducked out of the White House after the ceremony. Henderson headed back to the Treasury Department next door for meetings with Obama's auto industry task force, which will decide in the coming days whether to push GM into bankruptcy.

Government Set to Assist Car Buyers!

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Barack Obama and Democratic lawmakers reached agreement on Tuesday on a legislative proposal designed to stimulate U.S. auto sales, which have fallen to near 30-year lows.
The one-year plan crafted by members of the U.S. House of Representatives would offer vouchers worth up to $4,500 for owners to replace their less fuel efficient vehicles for models that get better gas mileage.
The goal of the "cash for clunkers" legislation is to sell 1 million vehicles.
"By stimulating consumer demand for new vehicles, this proposal will directly benefit domestic autoworkers and automotive manufacturers, which have arguably been hardest hit by the current economic downturn," said Rep. John Dingell, a Michigan Democrat and staunch industry ally.
House Majority leader Steny Hoyer has embraced the proposal and said in an interview with Reuters in April that the measure would be acted upon quickly once proposed.

Quality is Still Job #1!

Study: Ford Surpasses Honda in Initial Quality

Ford surpasses Honda in initial quality and remains in a statistical tie at the top with Toyota.
Ford’s initial vehicle quality improved 5 percent over last year.
Ford customer satisfaction continues to improve and is equal to Toyota and Honda.
Ford has five segment leaders: Ford Mustang, Taurus, Taurus X and Ranger, and Mercury Milan.Ford Motor Company, continuing its rapid quality improvement, surpassed Honda in initial vehicle quality for the first time and reached new levels of customer satisfaction with vehicle quality, a new survey shows.

Ford is also statistically tied with Toyota at the top of the industry when it comes to initial vehicle quality, according to the 2009 U.S. Global Quality Research System (GQRS) survey conducted quarterly for Ford by RDA Group of Bloomfield Hills, Mich.

“This is truly a significant accomplishment for us,” said Bennie Fowler, Ford group vice president, Global Quality. “Honda and Toyota have claimed bragging rights for years, but now we are seeing our hard work pay off. It’s evident in study after study.”

The latest GQRS survey measured 2009 model year vehicle initial quality in two categories: the number of “things gone wrong,” and customer satisfaction with vehicle quality in the first three months of ownership. In the first quarter of 2009, Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles saw things gone wrong fall by 5 percent to 1,228 per 1,000 vehicles, significantly better than Honda’s 1,422 things gone wrong per 1,000 vehicles and statistically equal to Toyota’s 1,150.

In addition, the survey shows that Ford Lincoln Mercury improved two percentage points to 79 percent in customer satisfaction with vehicle quality, which puts Ford’s domestic brands in a tie with Toyota and Honda for industry leadership.“Ford’s commitment to quality is really paying off as they continue to rival Honda and Toyota on both initial quality and customer satisfaction with the quality,” said Donald Pietrowski, president, RDA Group.

The following models led their respective segments in the survey:

  • Ford Mustang – initial quality and customer satisfaction for sports cars

  • Ford Taurus – initial quality for large cars

  • Ford Taurus X – initial quality for crossover utilities

  • Mercury Milan – initial quality for midsize cars

  • Ford Ranger – initial quality for compact pickups

The new 2009 Ford F-150 recorded quality levels that equate to less than one problem per vehicle, as did the Taurus, Taurus X, Fusion, Milan, and Edge.

“We are energized by the continuous improvement we are seeing on both initial vehicle quality and customer satisfaction,” said Fowler. “This survey validates the hard work and dedication to quality from Ford employees, suppliers and dealers. We will keep the momentum going as we strive to become the clear global quality leader.”

The GQRS study is conducted on a quarterly basis with scores assessed from survey responses collected from owners of vehicles purchased within specific short-term time frames.

New vehicle owners are asked to report any defects or issues as well as rate their satisfaction with vehicle quality on a scale of 1 to 10 across an array of vehicle systems and features.

FORD GAINS RETAIL SHARE AS FUSION SETS SALES RECORD

FORD GAINS RETAIL SHARE AS FUSION SETS SALES RECORD

Ford gains retail share – for the sixth time in last seven months
Ford Fusion sets monthly sales record and grows strength in mid-size car segment
Ford hybrids combine to eclipse year-ago sales; Kelley Blue Book names Fusion Hybrid and Escape Hybrid to Top 10 Green Cars list

DEARBORN, Mich., May 1, 2009 – New, fuel-efficient products and quality on par with the best in the industry helped Ford increase retail market share in April – the sixth time in the last seven months that Ford’s share of the retail market was higher than a year ago.
In April, the Ford Fusion paced the share performance. Fusion sales totaled 18,321, a record for any month. April was the first full month of sales for the redesigned 2010 model and the new Fusion Hybrid version, and April is believed to be the first month that Fusion was among the top three-selling mid-size sedans. Recent independent studies rate Fusion and the Mercury Milan – the most fuel-efficient mid-size sedans in America – as having the best predicted reliability among all mid-size sedans.
“We continue to operate in a very challenging economic and competitive environment,” said Ken Czubay, Ford vice president, Sales and Marketing. “Especially given this external environment, we’re very encouraged by the consumer response to our new mid-size sedans.”
“Sales of the 2010 Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan, Lincoln MKZ and hybrid versions exceeded our plan and customers also are equipping our new products with levels of content and features that are higher than we expected,” he added. “This suggests consumers view our high-quality, fuel-efficient new products as offering outstanding value.”
The new Fusion Hybrid is one of four hybrid models offered by Ford. Hybrid models also are offered in the Mercury Milan mid-size sedan and the Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner small utility vehicles. All Ford hybrid models are the most fuel-efficient vehicles in their class, and the Ford Escape and Ford Fusion recently were named to Kelley Blue Books list of Top 10 Green Cars. In April, combined sales of all hybrid models totaled 2,299, up 21 percent versus a year ago.
Other new Ford products contributed to the retail share performance, including the new F-150 pickup, America’s best-selling vehicle, and Ford Flex, the distinctively styled crossover utility that had its best sales month ever (3,190).
Growing awareness and consideration of Ford and its high-quality, fuel-efficient products are starting to take hold. Plus, through June 1, Ford is offering consumers additional reasons to “Drive one.”
The Ford Advantage Plan offers payment protection up to 12 months for up to $700 per month on any new Ford, Lincoln or Mercury vehicle if a customer loses his or her job. Plus, 0 percent financing from Ford Motor Credit is available on select vehicles.
On Tuesday, April 28, Ford launched a community engagement phase of the Ford Advantage Plan, Through June 1, Ford will donate $20 to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure for every test drive taken at a participating Ford, Lincoln and Mercury dealership to Komen – up to $1 million. That amount could grow even higher as more than a thousand dealers around the country are joining in to match the company’s donation. During the past 15 years, Ford has contributed more than $100 million to the fight against breast cancer.

How Far Can You Go on a Tank of Gas?

Go 1,300 Miles With a Single Tank of Gas

-- Ford Fusion Hybrid Exceeds Challenge Goal

By ASHLEY BROWN -- 6:19 AM EDT, Tue, Apr 28, 2009
In the shadows of the nation's capital, Ford set a new standard for future cars.
Monday night, Ford's hybrid, the 2010 Fusion, managed to go more than 1,300 miles on a single tank of gas. That means you could drive a Fusion straight from New York to Miami without stopping to fill up.
A team including Ford hybrid engineers, a fuel efficiency expert, and NASCAR star Carl Edwards started the "1,000 Mile Challenge" on Saturday morning in Mount Vernon, Virginia. They were still going along the George Washington Parkway by late Monday night, getting an average of 81.6 miles per gallon.
The team of experts had some strategies (what they call "Eco-Driving" techniques) to maximize mileage on the hybrid's journey, including:
- Gradually accelerating and smoothly braking
- Coasting up to red lights and stop signs to avoid fuel waste and brake wear
- Avoiding bumps and potholes that can reduce momentum
Besides giving us another reason to drive hybrid cars, the 1,000 Mile Challenge also raised funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Ford to Accelerate Hybrid Development

Ford Motor Co. has decided to speed up the development of lithium-ion battery systems for a new generation of hybrids and electric vehicles, according to a report by Detroit News Monday. Susan Cischke, Ford group vice president in charge of sustainability, was quoted as saying that the company is strongly positioned to accelerate its electric vehicle strategy this year. Susan said the company is working with battery suppliers and university researchers and it expects to begin building hybrids and electric vehicles next year. Ford expects lithium-ion batteries to be 5 percent more energy efficient than the nickel-metal hydride cells it uses today, and says these batteries will cost about 30 percent less to manufacture.

Ford of Ocala Supports Junior Diabetes Research!

Think Green! Win Green!
Enter to win the opportunity to Drive Green for 2 weeks
or other great prizes while showing your support for
the Junior Diabetes Research Foundation.

America is really taking notice of the new Ford Fusion Hybrid. With an amazing 41mpg in the city, the Fusion Hybrid is America's most fuel-efficient mid-size sedan.

This gave us a great idea.

Just how far is it possible to travel on a single tank of gas in the new Ford Fusion Hybrid? A team of Ford engineers is going to find out when they take the car to Washington, D.C. and drive it from full to empty.

And while they do that, we're asking for your help to raise awareness and funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). We will make it worth your while, too!

Take a moment and log on to (
www.jdrf.org/fordfusionhybridchallenge). There, you will find a simple form where you can enter in your guess as to how many miles the team will travel on a single tank of gas. The contest runs thourgh April 24. To help you out, here are a few fun facts.

  • The Fusion Hybrid fuel tank holds 17.5 gallons
  • The EPA city rating is 41mpg
  • Our team has been in training and has already beaten these EPA numbers on a regular basis and by a significant margin
  • The driving team will be using their eco-driving skills to get the very best fuel economy possible

The person who gets closest to the final verified mileage (to the nearest single decimal point) will be given the opportunity to drive their own Fusion Hybrid or Milan Hybrid for two weeks, with a $50 gas card provided by our partners at BP. In addition, the second place winner will receive a $300 gas card from BP, and the third place winner to receive a BP gas card for $200.

To support JDRF, any donation amount is appreciated -- it is recommended that it be $1 or more -- to be made with your entry. You can place as many guesses as you like. These dollars add up and all go to help find a cure for diabetes.

So, get your calculators out and work out what you think this remarkable Fusion Hybrid is capable of and wish the team all the best for their 'smart driving' initiative in Washington.

Thank you for your support.

Cash in old cars for new ones Economy, consumers, automakers would all benefit
-- USA Today 03/31/09 -- By Bill Ford
In spite of the many challenges our country faces, I strongly believe the government stimulus and other steps to thaw credit markets will be effective in driving economic growth over time.
But we still face an immediate and serious challenge. Last week, President Obama observed that U.S. auto sales have seen a huge drop-off, starkly noting "every automaker is getting killed right now." In just one year, U.S. auto sales have fallen by nearly 50%. And March's sales numbers promise to be sobering for foreign and domestic automakers.
This unprecedented trend is sustainable for neither the industry nor the economy. We urgently need to draw reluctant consumers back into the marketplace. The good news is that there is a proven initiative, outlined by the president on Monday, that can help consumers overcome their fear. The plan also would help the environment and increase energy security. It has been called a "fleet modernization" or a "scrappage" program. Whatever the name it works.
In January, the German government enacted a consumer incentive equivalent to $3,200 to scrap automobiles that are at least 9 years old and buy new, more environmentally advanced vehicles. By February, sales of new vehicles jumped 21% over the same month a year before. Countries such as Japan, France, Italy, South Korea and others are considering or already have similar programs.
This model can work in the U.S., too. President Obama said that he would like to use parts of the economic stimulus package to fund a program that would give consumers a "generous credit" when they replace an older car with a new, more fuel-efficient car.
President Obama has rightly emphasized the importance of vehicle fuel-efficiency gains and expressed concern about shrinking U.S. auto sales and the risk it poses to the economy. This program could help the environment and jobs.
How the program would work Here's how one bipartisan proposal before Congress would work to stimulate new vehicle purchases. The program would provide vouchers to consumers for vehicles at least 9 years old. The vouchers likely would be worth more than the current value of their vehicle. For example, a consumer who turns in an older car could get a voucher ranging from $4,000 to $5,000 to use as a down payment on a $20,000 car that exceeds 27 miles per gallon. Combined with current auto sales incentives, consumers likely will get unprecedented deals on more fuel-efficient cars.
An independent analyst, Barclays Capital, estimates that this proposal could boost sales by 2.5 million units if 2% of eligible vehicles were traded in. This surge in sales would help preserve American jobs in communities across the country.
Taxpayers are rightly concerned about the federal deficit given the significant spending on the economic stimulus. Let me clarify, Ford is in a different position and is not seeking emergency taxpayer assistance. Nonetheless, Congress needs to spur consumer demand for autos the largest purchase a family makes after a home.
This vehicle modernization idea would require additional investment by taxpayers. Its cost would be dependent on how Congress structures the incentive and its duration. The alternative, however, if sales do not rebound quickly, is more jobs losses, more home foreclosures, and less revenue for governments that must provide more jobless and health care benefits.
In addition to its consumer benefits, this initiative would help reduce our carbon footprint. Automakers are accelerating efforts to reduce greenhouse gases, but the latest fuel-economy rules apply only to new cars. This proposal would help America get greener faster by retiring a portion of the 240 million vehicles on the road. It could reduce our CO2 emissions by millions of metric tons per year.
Fuel efficiency means lower costs The program also would help contribute to greater energy independence. Replacing an older car with a new, more fuel-efficient one drives down gas consumption. That helps consumers, too. In fact, the Department of Energy estimates a family could save $780 per year by moving from a vehicle with 18 miles per gallon to one with 30 mpg.
The auto industry, both foreign and domestic, needs to work together to do our part in turning the economy around. But we also need to use the tools that our government possesses, and routinely deploys in so many other ways, to help move the economy more swiftly to a better place.
Improved auto sales will be one of the key indicators that America is on the road to economic recovery. As Congress weighs a national energy policy, climate change or even more stimulus measures, we urge lawmakers to consider this market-based consumer incentive. This fleet modernization idea would be a winwin-win for the consumer, the economy, the environment.

Ford CEO is revitalizing the car market!

Mulally says Ford now has competitive edge CEO believes key concessions will allow automaker to survive industrys crisis

The Detroit News 03/30/09 Dearborn

When Alan Mulally flew into town a little more than two years ago to take the top job at Ford Motor Co., many wondered what an aerospace executive from Seattle knew that Detroits best and brightest did not.
Plenty, apparently. Days before word that General Motors Corp. CEO Rick Wagoner was ousted by the Obama administration as part of a plan to provide GM with more federal aid, Mulally sat in his corner office on the 12th floor of Ford headquarters with a grin on his face.
Asked why he was smiling, he did not hesitate Ford has won all of the concessions it needs from labor and investors to weather the industry's crisis even if car and truck sales continue to decline.
Just three months ago, Ford said it might have to join GM and Chrysler LLC in asking Washington for help if auto sales did not bottom out by May or June.
But Ford has since reached an agreement with the United Auto Workers to reduce labor costs, and Ford bondholders snapped up an offer to swap debt for equity in the company, money-saving moves that put Ford on a more level playing field with Asian rivals.
We are competitive now, Mulally told The Detroit News in an interview Friday. The downturn is a temporary thing. We just have to make it through it.
Analysts are predicting that March auto sales, to be released on Wednesday, will come in well below February's dismal numbers -- demand fell 41.4 percent last month compared to a year ago -- suggesting that there is no end in sight to the sales slump that has automakers reeling from Detroit to Tokyo. But Mulally said Ford has taken all the steps necessary to respond to the crisis.
Over the past month, the automaker has convinced UAW members to accept major modifications to the union's labor contract. Sources say those concessions will cut Ford's labor costs to less than $50 an hour, putting it on par with Japanese manufacturing operations in the United States. Ford also offered bondholders a debt restructuring that was oversubscribed within a couple of weeks.
Investors jumped on the offer like it had slapped their mothers, said analyst Shelly Lombard of Gimme Credit. Ford will shed $2.2 billion of bank debt, $4 (billion) to $4.4 billion of bonds, and $4.9 billion of convertible notes. That's $11.1 (billion) to $11.5 billion or almost a third of its $36 billion of debt. And we estimate Ford will save as much as $600 million of interest expense (annually).
Now, Mulally says, it is just a matter of continuing to match production to the actual demand for Ford's cars and trucks.
Judging by inventory levels, Ford has been doing that. Despite the sales drop, the company ended February with 32 percent fewer vehicles on dealer lots than a year ago.
Ford could still benefit from more consolidation among its dealers and suppliers, but that is likely to occur organically given the weak economy.
They've done what they have in their control to do, and they've done a terrific job doing it, said David Cole, chairman of the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor. There's nothing obvious left to do.
Consumers appreciate Ford's effort to save itself without government loans, Mulally said, and that is having an impact on the showroom floor. Still, some have suggested that Ford is playing a dangerous game by touting its self-reliance when the industry's recovery is far from certain.
Mulally is adamant that the only scenario that would force Ford to ask for government aid now is if the country's economic decline dramatically worsens. He is confident that the Obama administration will not let that happen.
We have the economy on the top of the agenda, and we're moving decisively to deal with it, Mulally said. We're not taking taxpayer money.
Cole said that message has resonated with American consumers, who mainly oppose anything resembling a bailout. But he stressed that Ford cannot begin to rebound until there is a broader recovery in the U.S. auto market.

Ford of Ocala introduces the Ford Advantage Plan!

FORD INTRODUCES BEST-IN-INDUSTRY PLAN TO IMPROVE CONSUMER CONFIDENCE, JUMP-START VEHICLE SALES

  • Ford leads the industry in boosting consumer confidence with the new Ford Advantage Plan
  • Ford will cover payments for up to 12 months on any new Ford, Lincoln or Mercury vehicle if customers lose their jobs
  • 0 percent financing is also offered through Ford Motor Credit on select Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles
  • Ford also is working with its dealers to introduce a local charity support program

DEARBORN, Mich., March 31, 2009 Ford Motor Company is introducing the most comprehensive program available to boost consumers buying confidence and begin rebuilding the American economy with the new Ford Advantage Plan.
The plan gives customers another reason to Drive One with payment protection of up to 12 months on any new Ford, Lincoln or Mercury vehicle, 0 percent financing on select vehicles and added local charity support.
Consumers remain anxious about the economy and their own outlook for the future. We at Ford want to do our part to rebuild faith in the marketplace by offering payment protection on every new Ford, Lincoln or Mercury vehicle for up to a year if our customers lose their jobs, said Ken Czubay, vice president of Sales and Marketing.
Just as important is additional charity support we will provide in conjunction with our local dealers, who are mindful of how non-profit organizations are struggling during this economic downturn, Czubay said. Ford and our dealers have always stepped up to take an active lead role in the community, and that’s why we are also including a charity element as part of the Ford Advantage Plan.
Ford Commitment to Local Communities In 2008, more than 18,000 Ford U.S. employees volunteered 100,000 hours to help people in their local communities – that is the equivalent of nearly $2 million dollars of in-kind corporate contributions. To continue the momentum, in April, Ford will introduce a program in partnership with its dealers throughout the country to assist local charities impacted by the economic downturn. Ford will announce complete details of this expansive community outreach effort in April.
All Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles are covered under the Ford Advantage Plan. The program runs from today through June 1.
In addition to providing 12 months of payment protection of up to $700 per month, customers can take advantage of 0 percent financing on select Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles through Fords financing partner, Ford Motor Credit.
Additional Peace of Mind Ford Quality, Safety and Fuel Efficiency When selecting their next Ford vehicle, customers also can take comfort in knowing that Fords newest vehicles are the best or among the best in fuel economy and cost of ownership.
The Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan are America’s most fuel efficient midsize sedans, and the Fusion has a higher residual value than the Toyota Camry after three years of ownership, according to the Automotive Leasing Guide (ALG).
Ford maintains strong residual values throughout its product lineup. Vehicles with strong residual values retain more of their value at the end of their lease contract period. The 2009 Ford F-150 recently received a Residual Value award from ALG for retaining the highest percentage of its original price among 2009 full-size light duty pickups at the end of a conventional three-year lease, based on ALG projections. The Ford Escape has a 10 point residual value advantage versus the Chevrolet Equinox after three years of ownership, and the Ford Focus has the highest residual value of any domestic product in the small car segment.
Fords improvements in quality have contributed significantly to our year over year improvements in residual values, added Czubay.
In addition, Fords quality is now on par with Toyota and Honda, and Ford continues to have more top safety picks than any other brand.

This is the strongest product lineup we have ever offered, Czubay said. When you combine these great products with payment protection, 0 percent financing and support for local charities, customers can feel confident about getting back into the market for a new car or truck.

Ford's Strong Sales creates the Drive Strong Sale!

PRESS RELEASE
Strong F-Series, Fusion Sales Drive Ford To Higher Retail Share For Fourth Consecutive Month
- Ford's F-Series truck and Fusion mid-size sedan helped Ford achieve a fourth consecutive month of retail market share increases
Last update: 12:00 p.m. EST Feb. 3, 2009
DEARBORN, Mich., Feb 03, 2009 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- Ford's F-Series truck and Fusion mid-size sedan paced Ford to a fourth consecutive month of retail market share increases. Ford estimates its share of the January retail market was 12.7 percent, up 0.3 point versus a year ago. This marks the first time since 1995 Ford has achieved a retail market share increase four months in a row.
In January, Ford's all-new F-150 truck picked up more accolades and market share. In January, the F-150 was named North American Truck of the Year and earned a quadruple 5-star crash test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and a Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Best-in-class capability and safety ratings and unsurpassed fuel economy appear to be driving F-Series appeal among buyers.
In January, the Fusion posted its highest retail share since August 2006. In March, the 2010 Fusion arrives in dealer showrooms as America's most fuel- efficient mid-size sedan for both hybrid and conventional gasoline models.
The new Fusion Hybrid delivers 41 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on highway, topping the Toyota Camry Hybrid by 8 mpg in the city and 2 mpg on the highway. The new four-cylinder Ford Fusion S achieves 34 mpg on the highway and 23 mpg in the city, beating both the gasoline-powered Camry and Honda Accord.
The Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner small utility vehicles and the Lincoln MKS luxury sedan also contributed to Ford's January market share increase.
Ford, Lincoln and Mercury sales totaled 90,596 in January, down 39 percent versus a year ago. Retail sales to individual customers were down 27 percent. Fleet sales were down 65 percent including a 90 percent decline in sales to daily rental customers.
Ford and industry sales in January were consistent with Ford planning assumptions.
"During the last four months, retail demand appears to have stabilized, and the strength of our new products is a key reason we're growing our share in these challenging market conditions," said Ken Czubay, Ford vice president, Sales and Marketing. "We expect new, recent and future fiscal and monetary actions to help improve conditions in the second half of the year."
Ford inventories were 420,000 vehicles at the end of January, which is 156,000 vehicles lower than a year ago. During the past 12 months, Ford's inventories were reduced by 27 percent - consistent with the company's sales decline (22 percent) during this same period.
Note: The sales data included in this release and the accompanying tables are based largely on data reported by dealers representing their sales to retail and fleet customers.

Quality is Ford's Best Product!

Better quality is translating into fewer trips to the car dealership for warranty repairs and that leads to happier customers. The latest J.D. Power and Associates’ 2008 Customer Service Index (CSI) study shows a historic low across the industry in the proportion of customers bringing their vehicles to the dealer for repair work versus maintenance, as well as an increase in overall satisfaction. For example, 51% of Ford service customers were in for maintenance work back in 2005 and 49% were in for repair work. In 2008, the maintenance rate jumped to 66% and the repairs dropped to 34%. The company’s ongoing efforts to increase quality can be pinpointed as one reason for the trend.“This is further proof that Ford’s quality processes are working,” says Bennie Fowler, group vice president, Quality. “We’re launching with quality – right out of the factory – and that leads to long-term durability for our customers.”The CSI study – which explores satisfaction with dealer maintenance and repair services – ranked Lincoln and Mercury fifth and sixth, respectively, while Ford brand improved at a greater rate than the industry average.

Why Ford is the Strongest Value Today...

Our plan is actually quite simple: to build the best vehicles on the road today and make them affordable for millions.
We are accomplishing this by:

  • Aggressively restructuring to operate profitably at the current demand and changing model mix
  • Accelerating development of new products our customers want and value
  • Financing our plan and improving our balance sheet
  • Working together effectively as one team

When do we plan to do this? It's already under way.During the past three years, we have switched to a lineup that includes many new cars and crossovers. They've been proven to match the quality of the imports,* along with enhanced safety, better fuel mileage, and innovative technology. You'll be glad to know Ford has been making great progress ... we're sure you will agree.
Ford Motor Company, Honda Motors and Toyota Motors quality ratings are in a dead heat.*
Our cars, trucks and SUVs deliver fuel economy that's competitive with that of all other automakers.**
Fifteen 2009 Ford Motor Company vehicles are rated Top Safety Picks by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), more than those of any other automaker.
Our factories and the vehicles they produce have pioneered environmentally friendly techniques.

It is Kenseth’s first career Cup win at Daytona. (He won a Nationwide race at Daytona in 2000.)
This is Kenseth’s first victory since the 2007 season-ending Ford 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Ford has now won the Daytona 500 10 times.

MATT KENSETH – No. 17 DeWalt Ford Fusion (finished 1st) – VICTORY LANE INTERVIEWS: “It’s gonna be really wet out here because I’m crying like a baby, but I’ve just got to thank my team and thank the Lord for giving me this opportunity first of all. I’ve had a lot of great opportunities in my life – from my family getting me in racing and really DeWalt, Ford, Carhartt, USG Sheetrock, R&L Carriers, all the sponsors that we have that have stuck by us and made this happen in an up and down economy. Man, I don’t know. Winning the Daytona 500 is definitely a dream moment. It’s just an unbelievable feeling.”

Ford is the Leader in Technology Again!

STUDY: FORD RANKED AS INDUSTRY LEADER FOR QUALITY AND SIGNIFICANCE OF TECHNOLOGY PATENTS
  • Leading patent analyst ranks Ford above all other automakers for the quality and significance of its technology patents.
  • The 2010 Fusion and Fusion Hybrid – America’s most fuel efficient mid-size sedan – sets new standard for technology innovation with 119 U.S. patents and patent applications

DEARBORN, Jan. 28, 2009 – A new study by the world’s leading patent analyst, The Patent Board™, found that Ford Motor Company outperformed all other automakers in the quality and significance of its technology patents.
“Ford’s patented technologies are closer to the cutting edge than its competitors,” says Christine Wren, director of business development for The Patent Board, which tracks and analyzes patents across 17 industries globally.
Technological innovation is a core value at Ford as the company drives for leadership in quality, safety, fuel efficiency and in-car connectivity. For example, the 2010 Ford Fusion and Fusion Hybrid, which is America’s most fuel efficient mid-size sedan, have 119 patents, a record for Ford.
The Patent Board recently issued its Top 10 Innovators in Automotive & Transportation Patent Scorecard™ for the fourth quarter of 2008, which ranks Ford above all other automakers in Research Intensity™ and Industry Impact™. Ford’s Research Intensity score, which is more than twice that of the industry average, indicates the extent to which its portfolio includes patents with strong scientific support.

Similarly, The Patent Board’s Industry Impact score measures the broader significance and impact of a company’s patent portfolio across the industry. This indicator analyzes how other patents build on Ford’s innovation by looking at patent-to-patent citations.
“Ford’s overall patent portfolio plays a significant role in serving as a foundation for other technology innovation as shown by receiving 20 percent more citations than the average portfolio in this industry,” Wren says.
For the Fusion Hybrid, for example, teams of research scientists and engineers developed Ford-exclusive technologies that helped the vehicle achieve a certified 41 mpg in the city, 8 mpg better than the Toyota Camry hybrid.
“Ford is using technology to remake our lineup with the green, high-tech vehicles customers want,” says Derrick Kuzak, group vice president, Global Product Development. “The Fusion Hybrid team set the bar high – to develop America’s most fuel efficient mid-size sedan – and that’s what they delivered.”
Patents on the Fusion Hybrid pertain to technologies such as Ford’s new-generation hybrid powertrain and SmartGaugeTM with EcoGuide digital instrument cluster that helps coach drivers to achieve better fuel efficiency.
“We focus on getting high-quality patents that have the best breakthrough potential for the company,” says Bill Coughlin, president and CEO of Ford Global Technologies.
Specific Fusion and Fusion Hybrid patents include:

  • Hybrid technology – The Fusion Hybrid’s powertrain system combines the best attributes of the gasoline engine and electric battery-driven motors to deliver the optimal experience for the customer in terms of driving performance and fuel economy. The overall system upgrade allows the hybrid to operate up to 47 mph in pure electric mode, approximately twice as fast as some competitors. The city driving range on a single tank of gas is expected to be more than 700 miles.
  • SmartGauge™ with EcoGuide – This unique instrument cluster helps coach Fusion Hybrid drivers on how to optimize performance of their vehicle for maximum fuel efficiency. It features two, high-resolution, full-color liquid crystal display (LCD) screens on either side of the analog speedometer that can be configured to show different levels of information, including fuel and battery power levels, average and instant mpg report.
  • Blind Spot Information System (BLIS™) with Cross Traffic Alert – Ford’s new Cross Traffic Alert feature will help warn drivers of impending traffic while backing out by using radars to pick up moving objects within a 65-foot range from either side of the vehicle. Two warnings are given: an indicator lights up in the corresponding outside mirror and an audible alert is sounded. The feature works in conjunction with Ford’s radar-based Blind Spot Information System, utilizing this system’s two multiple beam radar modules, which are packaged in the rear quarter panels – one per side. The radar identifies when a vehicle enters the defined blind spot zone and illuminates an indicator light on the corresponding sideview mirror providing a warning that a vehicle is approaching.
  • EasyFuel™ Capless Fuel-Filler System – This industry-exclusive feature eliminates the need to touch dirty gas caps and helps to reduce evaporative emissions that create smog. When fueling is completed and the fuel pump nozzle is removed, the system automatically seals shut.

Patenting is a global activity at Ford, with experts in the United States, Europe, India and China sharing common processes and reporting through Ford Global Technologies, LLC, a wholly owned Ford subsidiary responsible for managing Ford’s intellectual property worldwide.

The 6-Speed PowerShift is coming to America!

The dual clutch gearbox installed in the Lincoln Concept C and Volvo S60 Concept that debuted at the Detroit Auto Show is now officially coming to Ford's lineup. The Getrag-supplied PowerShift gearbox was hinted at on the Fiesta micro-site that Ford recently launched and will be available in the new sub-compact when it launches at the end of the year. Like the DSG units used in a number of Volkswagens, the PowerShift allows full automatic control or clutchless manual shifting. Ford's first PowerShift is already available in the current European Focus with a 2.0L diesel engine. That unit is a wet-clutch system like most of the current VW DSG boxes. The new unit set to debut in the Fiesta is a dry-clutch system that's both lighter and more efficient. The 6-speed PowerShift weighs 30 lbs less than the 4-speed automatic currently offered in the U.S.-market Focus and should deliver 9-percent better fuel economy.

2010 Taurus gets a "Makeover"!

DETROIT, Jan.11, 2009 – The Ford Taurus – the car that changed America’s view of full-size sedans – is all-new for 2010 and ready to take on the world’s best, with an upscale new design, impeccable driving dynamics, class-leading technologies and an unbeatable price tag.
“The new Taurus sets the pace for Ford’s growing new car launch momentum,” said Mark Fields, president of The Americas. “This sedan completely redefines expectations of what Taurus stands for – and helps further define what Ford is capable of delivering – quality, fuel-efficient vehicles featuring the latest technologies and head-turning design.”

The new Taurus benefits from Ford’s Global Product Development System, which made it possible to deliver an all-new sedan 12 months sooner – with more new features than customers and dealers dreamed possible.
“Taurus is our premium Ford flagship, and it casts a halo across the entire brand portfolio,” said Derrick Kuzak, group vice president for global product development. “Building on its reputation for safety leadership, we leveraged extensive use of computer-aided design and engineering technologies as well as digital pre-assembly modeling to deliver a high-quality, new Taurus a year ahead of schedule.”
Even better news? The new 2010 Taurus will start at $25,995 – the same price as 2009 models but with more class-leading features, new technologies and perceived quality that rivals premium luxury sedans.
“The new Taurus showcases the what the Ford brand promise is – expressive design, class-leading technologies and an engaging driving experience,” said Jim Farley, Ford’s group vice president of Marketing and Communications. “To truly appreciate the new Taurus, you have to drive it. All of the experiences come together once you’re behind the wheel.”

Kelley Blue Book Selects 2009 F-150 "2009 BEST REDESIGNED VEHICLE"!

FORD’S ICONIC F-150 NAMED ‘2009 BEST REDESIGNED VEHICLE’ FROM KELLEY BLUE BOOK’S KBB.COM"The 2009 F-150 is more than a truck – it’s a work system," said Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com in naming the truck its "2009 Best Redesigned Vehicle"Accolade offers additional proof that Ford’s success comes from listening to its customers and delivering the capability and fuel economy they requireDEARBORN, Mich., Dec. 10, 2008 – Editors at Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com today announced that Ford’s all new 2009 F-150 – an American icon with class-leading capability and unsurpassed fuel economy – has earned the title of “2009 Best Redesigned Vehicle.” (http://www.kbb.com/kbb/NewsAndReviews/BestRedesignedVehicleAward.aspx)“I just really like this truck,” said Jack R. Nerad, executive editorial director and executive market analyst for Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com. “I think it’s the sheer power of it that’s so impressive. It’s such an important truck in the market; it’s so important to Ford and to the domestic auto industry in general. There are so many variations, and so many innovations. In some ways, the F-150 is more than a truck – it’s a work system.”The all-new 2009 F-150, new inside and out, is the new benchmark in the full-size pickup segment.Improvements include a new high-strength, lighter-weight chassis that allows this tough truck to deliver even more horsepower, unsurpassed fuel economy and class-leading towing and payload capacity.Nerad noted the array of available technology – from the industry-exclusive SYNC to Ford Work Solutions. SYNC provides hands-free, in-car communication. Ford Work Solutions is an innovative suite of options including an in-dash computer with Internet access, Tool Link to track tools, Crew Chief technology to dispatch workers and reduce vehicle operating costs and Cable Lock to improve security. He also singled out the added conveniences of the Box Side Step and Tailgate Step that helps customers easily gain access to the truck’s pickup box.“There really is something there for everybody,” Nerad said. “There are so many interior and exterior design changes on this truck, and all of them are stellar.”The F-150, he said, was chosen after the editors looked at all the redesigned vehicles on the market – cars, CUVs, SUVs and trucks – and winnowed the selections down to a top 10.The accolade is gratifying, said chief engineer Matt O’Leary, not only for the prestige it carries, but because it also offers an indication of how Ford’s continual interaction with its unparalleled customer base brings results.“When we set out to redesign the F-150, we said we would leave no stone unturned to ensure that our 31-year leadership on full-size trucks continued for many more years,” O’Leary said. “This recognition is just another indication that our success is founded on listening to the customer better than anyone else and finding innovative solutions to their concerns. That’s not something we take lightly – we live it every day.”In addition to being named the 2009 Best Redesigned Vehicle from Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com since its launch in October, the new 2009 F-150 has won the following awards:

  • Top honors as “Truck of Texas” as well as “Best Luxury Pickup” for the 2009 F-150 King Ranch from Texas Auto Writers Association

  • “Best Overall Half-Ton Pickup” from PickupTrucks.com

  • “Automotive Excellence” award in the Workhorse Category from Popular Mechanics

  • “Top Safety Pick” from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety for its standard safety technology: Safety Canopy side curtain air bags and AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control

  • “Residual Value” award from Automotive Leasing Guide (ALG) for retaining the highest percentage of its original price among 2009 full-size light duty pickups at the end of a conventional three-year lease, based on ALG projections
